Replacing Food July 2009 Challenge

Starting in the month of July we here in the office, Dr. Carr, Heidi, and I (Liz) have decided to issue monthly health challenges to our patients, ourselves, and others who wish to join us. The challenges will range from eating certain foods, to exercising, to showing gratitude; the goal will be to help all of us integrate healthy habits into our everyday lives.

So, welcome to our health challenge for July 2009. Over the course of this month the challenge is to find four food items in your kitchen that are unhealthy and replace them with items that are healthy.

When we decided that this would be the first challenge I started to look at the items in my kitchen in a whole new light. I wondered what I myself would replace. I admit there have been many things over the last 6 years while working for Dr. Carr that I have changed about my diet and eating lifestyle but I knew as I looked around my kitchen that there was room for improvement.

For example, I don't know why but I have been going through a fish stick stage Fish sticks have have become my signature "lazy" dinner, the thing I cook when I don't want to cook. They are being replaced as of July 1st with frozen Cod fish filets which I will bake and serve with lemon juice, they won't have the crunch I so love but they will be much better for me.

The second thing is the bread, it is time to go back to whole wheat.

The last two items I am still thinking about. Heidi is having an even tougher time than I am, she is a Vegan which naturally means that she eats very natural forms of food already but she is up for the challenge and will let us know what she chooses to change in her kitchen as well.

Please let us know about the healthy items that you have found to replace the unhealthy ones by contacting us at the office, e-mailing us or posting a comment to this blog post. Thank you for joining us in this challenge. The best of luck to you in health and happiness.

UPDATE:
Well the end of July has come and gone and I wanted to just update everyone on the four items I replaced. First, I replaced my white bread for whole wheat (and discovered a lot of whole wheat fakes out there in the process). Second, I replaced my white rice for wheat. Third, my fruit snacks with fruit leather (so good!). Lastly my fish sticks, I did get rid of them but have yet to find a fish option I truly enjoy to replace them with. I tried Tuna (and have discovered I have outgrown the taste for tuna), I tried the fish filets but didn't enjoy them as much and didn't like the way they cooked up. I have high hopes I will find something soon.

Heidi and Dr. Carr, after much searching, really could not find anything in thier cupboards that needed replacing, good for them for already living healthy. Actually, I was suprised to find a vast majority of our patients who struggled to find four things to replace, so great job everyone in already choosing healthy items to eat.
