Yoga-A-Day August 2009 Challenge

I can tell you that here in the office Dr. Carr recommends Yoga exercises and stretches to patients on a regular basis, and Dr. Carr himself does Yoga regularly.

Yoga is a powerful tool that can be used with regular chiropractic adjustments to increase muscle strength, flexibility, and promote good posture.

There is a picture on the wall here in the office that says "you don't stop playing because you get old you get old because you stop playing". One of the ways we can continue to "play" as we age is by taking care of ourselves in the present. Dr. Carr many times a day tells patients that motion is life. By keeping our bodies in motion we keep ourselfes healthy.

For example, many years ago the usual course of treatment for a low back injury from the medical community would be for the patient to lay down and in essence be bed ridden for a few weeks. Thankfully the medical community has now gotten smarter in their approach to low back injuries and have discovered something that chiropractic as always known that movement after low back injuries gets people back to work and life a lot faster than immobility.

So, with this idea of motion being life, and yoga being so complimentary to chiropractic the challenge for the month of August is for each of you choose one yoga pose to do each morning. You can do the same pose each day or spice things up with a variety of poses over the course of the month. It is that simple!

You can go to our websites challenge tab to get information on finding the yoga pose that will work best for you.

UPDATE:
Man, I love yoga, I was able to find two yoga poses that I did reguarly throughout the month. There were days I forgot or just didn't make time but I got 23 days out of the month which isnt' too bad.

One of the yoga poses I did was actually recommended to help a person sleep better (sometimes I have trouble sleeping) and it worked for me. Overall I gained a better appreciation for Yoga and I felt much less tension between my shoulder blades and in my mid back since doing the poses.

I'm going to go out an a limb here and be the first to comment, even though this was 2 challenges ago. I did yoga VERY regularly for several years. I got pertusis in 2005 which all but brought all physical movement to a halt for nearly 4 months. It was horrible. I tried to do yoga again but even lying flat on my back was too painful. I took up some other exercise in the meantime to rehab my body. Not having done yoga regularly in the last 4 years made me feel pretty nervous about doing this beginner routine. It was HARD! As I was going through the practice, I became painfully aware that I have a much different body today than I did back in 2005 and will have to re-teach my body how to do yoga in a different way than I did in the early 2000s. I admit it was quite discouraging, but my mom just reminded me that I need to stop being so competitive with myself and be patient. Good lessons for life, too! So I'm grateful for this challenge and the consequent challenges it has presented to me. In the end I hope it will make me a better person.
